![]() I hope autor (or in collaborations with others doing the same) can in the future fill a full size book in usu discipulorum. The story has been reproduced here in printable format with the kind permission of E2BN with. ![]() All the activities in this unit have the aim of introducing students to the world of mythology, starting with Greek myths and moving on to explore myths from around the world. Not all of them are sold in the Netherlands (yet?) Also I would have liked margin notes in Latin or more pictures better, but am fine with the English notes. This is for use with or without my World Mythology materials. I would have preferred waiting a little bit and buying more themes in one book of tiered readings in stead of a full set of smaller books. Icarus and Daedalus attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Why no 5 stars? I wish the book had more of this! Lots of novella’s and CI content is so short and printed in enourmous font sizes. In Greek mythology, Icarus (/krs/ Ancient Greek:, romanized: Íkaros, pronounced karos) was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. I am so impressed by the skill of the writer doing magic: if I dive directly into the Latin, there is so much that I don’t understand yet, but going through three easier versions of the text I am not only understanding the text, but also why it is written this way and what subtle background story Ovid is implying with his words. And the auxiliary Latin is beautiful, exciting andfor sure not dull. Vladmir Nabokov references the myth in his sensual short story 'Spring in Fialta.' Nina, one of the storys most beguiling characters, dies in a car that Nabokov refers to as 'a long yellow-bodied Icarus. ![]() The tier with the original text form Ovid (and Hyginus) contains no more commentary, notes or translation, because the reader gets the feel of what is being told. Ovid, that fanciful poet, wrote one of the more beautiful and compelling versions of the Daedalus and Icarus story in his The Metamorphoses. When you follow the simple written stories you get pulled in the narrative and prepared for the difficult vocabulary and brevitas. What a nice way to get prepared for some real hexameters.
